Wal-Mart - The Corporate Enemy During the last 20 years, Wal-Mart has moved into many areas wiping out all the stores around causing people to loose jobs, slashing the tax base and causing many more disturbing problems to neighborhoods so people should stop supporting Wal-Mart for many of these reasons. Wal-Mart grew over the years into a 256 billion dollar company after making its name across the world in 1915. The major problem with Wal-Mart is that it maintains its own mini-economy. It’s unbeatable low prices are so unbearable even the social status of many cities or towns don’t matter and can’t even compete with Wal-Mart therefore they are forced to be terminated. This may be an example of â€Å"survival of the fittest† but this process is hurting the economy majorly and there needs to be something done about this. Most of Wal-Mart’s suppliers are from China and that means less American made products and more foreign products going around. This lack of American production is what causes American factories to shut down, leaving the employees without jobs. A Look at Gay Marriage in the United States Essay PHIL 105 November 13, 2003 The American government, founded on the ideals of men wishing to escape persecution and tyranny, is a secular institution shaped by the Constitution and its Amendments. Over the two hundred plus years that America has been a country many infractions, oversights and misinterpretations have occurred which have unfairly inhibited the freedom of the American people. This truth can be seen in the continued refusal by the government as a whole to accept, legalize or recognize same sex marriages, which has led to unrest and dissention among the homosexual community and its supporters. This was an issue that was brought up in Dan Savages, The Kid. Same sex marriage, although a recent hot topic, is neither new, nor an unnatural product of the twentieth century, as many claim. Evidence of social acceptance of gay marriage can be found in Egyptian culture as far back as 2600 B.C., as well as in ancient Rome and medieval Europe. (Eskridge 17) More recent evidence of gay marriages has been found in colonial America, as well as during the twentieth century in East Coast communities such as Boston and Harlem. During both world wars, official marriage certificates could be obtained for gay couples in Harlem on a somewhat legal basis. (Eskridge 39-44) Despite the evidence of these fairly common unions, many of our law makers strongly oppose the legalization of the practice in America, based on the opinion that as heterosexuals they hold a sexual and therefore social superiority to homosexuals. Homophobia in America surfaced during the 1950s and 60s and was soon met by the protests and resistance movement of the homosexuals. Because of the civil rights movement, which was in full swing, the gay acceptance movement was overshadowed and received diminished media attention. (Eskridge 44) Since the original Civil Rights Movement, the Gay Rights Movement has moved to center stage in American Civil Rights debate. These basic rights, denied not just to some, but all homosexuals are mainly concerned with the institution of marriage. The argument can be made that marriage is something that homosexuals shouldnt want to take part in, but this is incorrect. The legal status involving marriage gives spouses certain state and federal benefits such as automatic inheritance, burial determination, divorce protections, immunity from testifying against spouse, certain membership, taxation and insurance breaks to which all people, including homosexuals are entitled to. Despite this long list of unattainable benefits, same sex marriage is still being denied due to the moral dilemmas some feel surround the issue. Many ask, Can marriage be simply redefined in the law? Should an institution that is available for deadbeat dads and convicted felons be denied law-abiding lesbian mothers of young children? Can a fundamental right to marry be unequally dispensed? (Sullivan 87) The answer is yes, marriage can and should be redefined by the law. Vermonts legislature passed a law that legally recognizes a civil union, but it does not include all the benefits of marriage heterosexual couples are afforded. In 1996 President Clinton signed into the law the Defense of Marriage Act. The act defined marriage as being between two people of the opposite sex, as well as making it legal for one state to deny a marriage certificate of another state if it is between two people of the same sex (Sullivan 201). This piece of legislation legally discriminates against the estimated ten percent of the American population. Starting All Over Starting All Over The Martian Chronicles By Ray Bradbury Ray Bradbury's the Martian Chronicles is a futuristic story about space travel, invasion and planet colonization. Analyzing characters in this twenty-eight-chapter novel is extremely difficult because every chapter includes different characters, which are oriented to form the plot. Each chapter's characters are used to show the founding of the planet Mars, the colonization of it, the destruction of Earth and almost the whole human race, and finally the rebuilding of the human civilization on Mars. The story starts off in the year of 1999 and ends twenty-seven years later in 2026. Ray Bradbury doesn't just tell his story from the point of view of the space travelers and the colonizers, but from angry Martians who were trying to kill the humans or Martians later on who were just having a conversation with a human about Mars, also people seeing the great colonial change happen. Captain Wilder was the captain of the fourth expedition to Mars from Earth. The three expeditions before had failed because either the Martians tricked and killed the earthlings or the earth people were thought of as mentally ill and sent to a hospital on Mars. Later on in the story when there are towns on Mars, the very few Martians are not discriminated against because the people on Mars were kind people who were in search of new things and seeing Martians was rare. Luckily the minor human sickness, chicken pox, had killed off most of the Martians accidentally. Captain Wilder and his crew explored the planet and responded to Earth to say that the missions were successful, and with only a few complications. Captain Wilder with his Crew of Jeff Spender, Hathaway, Sam Parkhill, Cheroke, Gibbs and a few other men help begin to portray the theme of the story, by finding Mars and seeing that it was safe (this was in the beginning of the story, but in the last several chapters they are br ought back as veterans of Mars when it is deserted). The theme is that humans are not a great race of colonizers, but they are really just destructive. All that was left for Earth to do was send the settlers to colonize Mars. Jeff Spender was a very quiet fellow; the crew called him, ?the Lonely One.? When Jeff reached Mars, he was outraged on how humans had killed this Martian race by a measly child irritation to some children. He left the group and learned as much as he could about their language and culture. Eventually Jeff became angry with humans because he knew what they would do to what was left of the alien culture when they colonize Mars. He said that unlike humans this race did not ask why we are here, they just enjoyed and basked in the rays of life. The Martian culture was magnificent and Jeff did not want it to be destroyed. Therefore his goal was not to let anyone colonize Mars. Jeff went back to Wilder's camp and shot Gibbs whom he greatly disliked because of his immature enmity towards the Martian culture. He then shot four more men who were eating lunch peacefully. Captain Wilder was a very serious and staid figure and also a good friend of Jeff Spender. Jeff thought that Wilder would und erstand his reasoning, but he was wrong. Wilder did not like that Jeff had killed his buddies and coworkers. Eventually after a long chase through the thin air of Mars, Wilder talked it over with Spender, but obviously they did not agree over this matter. This external conflict was solved and finished when Jeff was finally shot before he could stop the colonization of Mars by killing all space travelers. Captain Wilder's expedition was successful. After this mission was complete, Captain Wilder was sent with his crew to Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune for exploring. ?I heard they had kicked you upstairs so you wouldn't interfere with colonial policy here on Mars,? exclaimed Mr. Hathaway in 2026 after meeting up again with Captain Wilder.
